When you’re gearing up for your next dental check-up, you might find yourself wondering how much your dentist can deduce about your oral hygiene routine from just an examination. A common query many have is, “Can dentists really tell if I don’t floss?” The short answer is yes, your dentist can definitely tell if flossing isn’t part of your daily regimen. Let’s delve into how they figure it out.

Plaque & Tartar Build-Up

The main aim of brushing your teeth is to clear away plaque and bacteria, preventing them from building up and turning into tartar, also known as “calculus.” However, brushing alone doesn’t cover all the nooks and crannies of your teeth, particularly the spaces in between. That’s where flossing comes in, targeting the plaque in those hard-to-reach spots that brushing misses. If your dentist spots significant build-up between your teeth, it’s a tell-tale sign that flossing isn’t happening regularly or effectively.

Pockets in the Gums

During your examination, your dentist or hygienist will measure the depth of your gum pockets. Unremoved plaque that builds up can lead to these pockets, which are often indicators of gum disease and, in some cases, bone loss. Such conditions are clear signals of insufficient plaque removal, especially between the teeth, pointing directly to inadequate or non-existent flossing habits.

You’re Not Under Investigation

Remember, a visit to the dentist isn’t an interrogation. While it’s true that your dentist can assess your flossing and brushing effectiveness, the goal of your visit is guidance, not judgment. Your dentist is there to provide tips and techniques to improve your oral health, ensuring your smile stays healthy and vibrant. So, don’t skip your next check-up for fear of being judged.
